“When you confess your sin, it no longer defines you. You are defined by the grace of God.”

A thought by Mark Batterson (2011-01-18) in his book, Soulprint: Discovering Your Divine Destiny (pp. 139-140). Multnomah Books. Kindle Edition.

I love the story about a woman who said that God talked to her personally.  Her pastor heard her telling someone that and he took her aside to set her straight.  He wanted to prove to her that God didn’t talk to her so he said, “Now the next time you are talking to God would you ask Him something that He only knows about me, would you ask Him, ‘What was the last sin that I asked Him to forgive me for?’  Would you ask Him?”  She said she would.

A few days later, the pastor met with her and he asked her if she had asked God, “What was the last sin that he had asked Him to forgive his for?”  She said she had.  The pastor then asked knowing that he had her now, “Well what did He say?”  She then said that He said, “I don’t remember.”

Now of course that didn’t really happen but it does make a correct point that at the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012 you and I need to realize.  That is if you confessed any sin that you did this past year or any time in your life, if you confessed it to God, for one, He has forgiven you and for another, He has forgotten it.  Because of Christ’s death on the cross that sin if you confessed it has been totally done away with.  It is as if you have not done it in God’s mind.

Now wouldn’t that be a great thing to have happen on this last day of 2011?  You would go somewhere and in the quietness of your heart you would just say, “Jesus, I confess to you that I have sinned.  I know that I have done things that you didn’t want me to do.  Please forgive me of those sins, those things.  Thank You, so much for forgiving me and for forgetting that I ever did those things.  Come into my life, into my heart and live in and through me.”  I John 1.9 (NCV) says, “But if we confess our sins, he will forgive our sins, because we can trust God to do what is right. He will cleanse us from all the wrongs we have done.”

That sin will no longer define you because to God it didn’t happen.  Oh maybe your parents or your spouse or your friends remember it but He doesn’t.  To Him and to you it no longer defines you.  God’s grace, His unmerited favor, has freed you from the guilt of that action.  Just accept it and move forward even if those around you don’t.  That is there problem.

Now there may be some things you need to do, such as pay back something you stole, or tell someone the truth because you lied to them, or ask someone’s forgiveness that you betrayed or whatever restitution you need to make because of your sin.  God may ask you to do something to show you are serious and then you must determine not do it again.  You change the direction of your life.  Now if you do it again then just confess it and ask forgiveness and ask God to give you the power to not do it again.

Now don’t you think that would be a great way to end 2011 and to start 2012?

“There’s a big difference between building a castle and building a kingdom.”

A thought by Bob Goff from his book, Everybody, Always: Becoming Love in a World Full of Setbacks and Difficult People ( p. 41). Thomas Nelson. Kindle Edition. (Click on the book title to go to Amazon.com to buy the book.)   Have you ever built a sand castle or maybe a Lego castle?   Have you? Bob says, “We actually build castles all the time, out of our jobs and our families and the things we’ve purchased. Sometimes we even make them out of each other. Some of these castles are impressive too. Lots of people come to admire what we’ve built over the course of our lives and tell us what great castles we have. But Jesus told His friends we weren’t supposed to spend our lives building castles. He said He wanted us to build a kingdom, and there’s a big difference between building a castle and building a kingdom.” Bob goes on, “You see, castles have moats to keep creepy people out, but kingdoms have bridges to let everyone in. Castles have dungeons for people who ha...

“When you understand that life is a test, you realize that nothing is insignificant in your life.”

A thought by Rick Warren, (2012-10-23) from his book, The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For? (Purpose Driven Life, The) (p. 57). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. To realize that from God’s perspective life is a test goes a long way in determining how you handle your life.   It is important to see that in testing your character is both developed and revealed.   Rick goes on to say that “even the smallest incident has significance for your character development. Every day is an important day, and every second is a growth opportunity to deepen your character, to demonstrate love, or to depend on God.” So there is a God purpose behind each situation in your life.   Even the bad ones are there to strengthen you and develop you.   You see those bad situations are really good ones because they are there for your good. I start each day with a reminder that God is good.   Not every situation that is going to come in my day is good but because G...

“What areas of my personality, background, and physical appearance am I struggling to accept?”

A thought by Rick Warren, (2012-10-23) from his book, The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For? (Purpose Driven Life, The) (p. 35). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. Rick posed this question at the end of his chapter, You Are Not an Accident.   In this chapter he deals with the fact that God created you the way you are with a purpose.   In other words you are not an accident.   I am also reading the Apostle John’s view of Jesus and what He said and did while He was here on earth.   In the beginning of Chapter 9 there is a story about a blind man.   And the disciples who were with Him asked Him a good question, “Who sinned, this man or his parents that he was born blind? ”   Have you ever asked the same thing about something in you that you don’t like?   Like that characteristic is a curse or something.   Society has set a standard that is not a standard of God.   Remember, He created you and you are not an accident. Je...
