A thought by Max Lucado from his book, Because of Bethlehem (with Bonus Content): Love Is Born, Hope Is Here (p. 73). Thomas Nelson. Kindle Edition. (Click on the book title to go to Amazon.com to buy the book.)
I love to travel. My son, Brett and his family are on the road today headed to Colorado. I love that drive. Next week, Margaret and I will be headed from California to Nevada to be with our daughter, Stefanie and her family for Christmas. Holiday time is highway time.
Max says, “Ever since the magi packed their bags for Bethlehem, the birth of Jesus has caused people to hit the road.”
Matthew 2: 1– 2 (NLT) says, “Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the newborn king of the Jews?’” Matthew 2: 2 (NKJV), “We have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”
They went to the King thinking he should know but he didn’t so he asked his wise men and prophets and they went to the Scripture and it said, “Bethlehem.”
Max says, “The star sign was enough to lead the magi to Jerusalem. But it took Scripture to lead them to Jesus.”
He then says, “People see signs of God every day. Sunsets that steal the breath. Newborns that bring tears. Migrating geese that stir a smile. But do all who see the signs draw near to God? No. Many are content simply to see the signs. They do not realize that the riches of God are intended to turn us toward him. ‘Perhaps you do not understand that God is kind to you so you will change your hearts and lives’ (Rom. 2: 4 NCV).”
After they had worshiped the young child the wise men were told in a dream to go home a different way.
Max continues, “Called by a sign. Instructed by Scripture. And directed home by God. It’s as if all the forces of heaven cooperated to guide the wise men. God uses every possible means to communicate with you. The wonders of nature call to you. The promises and prophecies of Scripture speak to you. God himself reaches out to you. He wants to help you find your way home.”
He later says, “When God sends signs, be faithful. Let them lead you to Scripture. As Scripture directs, be humble. Let it lead you to worship. And as you worship the Son, be grateful. He will lead you home.”
Earlier Max said, “In order to find Jesus, every one of us needs direction. God gives it. The story of the wise men shows us how.”
