A thought by Leonard Sweet, (2012-03-13) from his
book, Viral: How Social Networking Is Poised to Ignite Revival (p. 54). Random House, Inc.. Kindle Edition.
Change can be a difficult thing for people. We get use to certain ideas and think they
will never change. Like, who would ever
think that our kids or grandkids would never have the need to learn to write? I know.
It’s called cursive now. For me
it was print or write. How we say it has
even changed.
In thinking about this change I had a little anxiety. Why in the world don’t they want my grandkids
to learn to write in cursive (see I can change)? That would be horrible. But then the thought came to me, why did we
need to learn to write in cursive in the first place? I mean
we first took all that time with just learning how to print and then along the
way they showed us another way to do the same thing. Why?
I haven’t done any research on the why but my first thought
was because cursive is a little faster than printing. But isn’t
texting faster? I mean, I can text an
instant message to my kids in Colorado and Nevada and they can text me right
back. I can write in cursive a letter
and send it to them and they may get it in two or three days and then they send
it back in two or three days and there may be a problem in reading it. I have trouble reading my own writing – in cursive.
Now here is my thought.
Would I rather have my kid’s teacher taking the time teaching my kid’s
something that is not really needed or taking the time to teach them something
they can really use in today’s culture?
Here is the point. I don’t
really care about which is right in this issue but I do care about fighting
battles without really thinking them through. My dad always said, “No paper is
so thin that it doesn’t have two sides to it.”
And maybe there is a very real reason why we need to change.
So many battles we get into come from our heart instead our head.
Maybe this is one of those. Now I’m
not to the point of not having my newspapers in the morning to read but someday
I’ll have to take my Tablet to Starbucks to read them, someday but not
tomorrow. I’m not emotionally ready for
that change.
By the way, can people read your cursive writing?
